Few activities produce the adrenalin rush gotten from skiing on steep slopes. However, those seeking this thrill must meet the challenge with the proper technique to ensure safety on the slopes.
The most critical element of steeps skiing is balance, and to achieve great balance, the skier must use and maintain the correct stance. For the starting position, the skier must push their weight slightly forward and not lean back to give them more control over their turns and speed. Also, the head and upper body should face downhill with a vigorous pole plant just before the edges are released.
Once the skier begins and is gathering speed on the slopes, they would again need good positioning techniques to navigate turns on the steeps safely. The best technique is the hop turn. This turn requires the simultaneous turn movement of both legs and feet to turn the ski while slightly jumping to force the skis out of the snow. Then when rotated and ready for landing, the skier should bend their knees to absorb the impact.
